Florida Travel Nurse Taxes: No State Income Tax, But Not “No Tax”

By Sharon Ben-Moshe · August 16, 2026

Florida has no individual state income tax, so it does not require a personal income-tax return. That does not make a Florida contract tax-free: federal tax still applies, and a nurse who remains resident in another income-tax state generally reports the wages to that home state.

Key takeaways

  • Florida’s Department of Revenue says Florida does not impose a personal income tax. A W-2 nurse should therefore have no Florida individual income-tax withholding and no Florida personal return solely because of the assignment.
  • Residency remains the catch. A traveler who keeps legal residence in another income-tax state may still report all income, including Florida wages, on that resident return. There is usually no Florida income tax to credit back to the home state.

How Florida Travel Nurse Taxes works

Florida’s Department of Revenue says Florida does not impose a personal income tax. A W-2 nurse should therefore have no Florida individual income-tax withholding and no Florida personal return solely because of the assignment.

Residency remains the catch. A traveler who keeps legal residence in another income-tax state may still report all income, including Florida wages, on that resident return. There is usually no Florida income tax to credit back to the home state.

Which return and records may be needed?

Use W-2 Boxes 15 through 17 as a starting point. A Florida W-2 should not create a Florida individual return, but it does not decide what your resident state requires. Keep prior assignment-state W-2s and nonresident returns separately.

Why state residency and your federal tax home are different

A state return asks which state may tax income. The federal travel-nurse tax-home analysis asks whether you were away from a qualifying tax home and incurred duplicated living expenses. One label does not establish the other, so keep the records for each question separate.

What to do before your first paycheck

  1. Confirm the first pay stub has no unexpected Florida income-tax withholding.
  2. Keep the lease, work dates, and duplicate-expense records supporting any tax-free stipends.
  3. Estimate the resident-state bill using the state you still claim as home.

FAQ

Do travel nurses file a Florida state return?

Not for Florida wages alone. Florida has no personal income tax, but federal tax and a resident return in another state can still apply.

Does a Florida assignment make me a Florida resident?

Not automatically. A temporary assignment or lease does not alone settle legal residence or domicile.

Are Florida stipends automatically tax-free?

No. Federal tax-free reimbursement still depends on the away-from-home and tax-home rules.

Can my home state tax Florida wages?

Often yes. A resident state can tax income from all sources under its own rules.
